The Prepostate ruins and the Árpád-era church

Dömös

A special Romanesque monument in Dömös is the spectacularly restored Prepost’s sub-church. The priory and chantry were founded at the beginning of the 12th century by Prince Álmos, the brother of Kálmán Könyves. Only the foundations of the former Romanesque church with its two towers, three naves and semicircular sanctuaries, the former royal castle on the south side and the building of the priory have been preserved. However, the sub-church under the raised sanctuary of the church has survived relatively intact. The site was excavated in the 1970s by the archaeologist László Gerevich. The remains of the ruins and stone carvings, which had been previously transported to museums, made it possible to carry out an authentic reconstruction of the church, which can now be visited.
